I often try to imagine how it would feel if I could freeze time and space to observe and enjoy the feel of a particular moment or the look of a particular thing and commit it to a perpetual memory. I use my artwork as a viewfinder to isolate these little joys from the landscape of a bigger, faster life. At the heart of it all, I'm inspired by the delight of finding beauty in unexpected places, and I use visual media -- printed ink and cut paper -- to share that beauty, to spread the joy. I rely on color, repetition, and line to create a sense of rhythm, harmony, or movement -- a visual melody. But vision depends on perspective. A strong background in graphic design has led me to adopt a more illustrative approach; it enables me to explore creativity with a vision that deals with simple (but recognizable) forms, rather than naturalistic representation. The goal is not to reproduce an experience exactly as it looked, but as I remember it: filtered through layers of memory, sensation, and emotion. Abstract feelings call for an abstracted visual language, yet one that can be easily read by others. Despite an inclination to create clean, pure, mechanical forms, I try to maintain the organic sense of something hand drawn by using loose, intuitive, painterly lines and shapes -- because in a big, fast world of mechanized beauty and ready-made solutions, it's very often the touch of a human hand that leaves the greatest impression.
